Stretching from Place Royale to Rue Mc- Gill, Place d’Youville owes its

Montrealers of various origins talking about their city. On the top floors are
temporary exhibits, as well as a glass covered overpass from which you can
admire Old Montréal.
Marché Sainte-Anne used to be located west of Rue Saint-Pierre and was the
seat of the Province of Canada’s Parliament from 1844 to 1849, when Orangemen
burned the building down following the adoption of a compensatory law aimed at
both English- and French-speaking victims of the 1837-1838 Rebellions. This
marked the end of Montréal’s political vocation; Canada’s Parliament was sub-
sequently moved to Toronto, then Qué- bec City and, finally, Ottawa in 1857.

Grises (Grey Nuns), a nickname given to these nuns who were falsely accused of
selling alcohol to natives and getting them drunk (in French, gris means both

took charge of the former Hôpital des Frères Charon, established in 1693, and
transformed it into the Hôpital Général des Sœurs Grises * (138 Rue Stt-Pierre;

wing and the ruins of the chapel are all that re- main of this complex, built
during the 17th and 18th centuries in the shape of an H. The Maison de Mère
d’Youville, which provides an overview of the life of the religious community’s
founder, can be visited here. The other part, which made up another of the old
city’s classical perspectives, was torn open when Rue Saint-Pierre was extended
through the middle of the chapel. The right transept and part of the apse,
visible on the right, have been reinforced in order to accom- modate a work of
